When I have had similar USB device probems, I used the program made by Uwe Sieber to clear out the old USB driver history, which could be the issue you are having.
During enumeration, the device sends Windows information about itself. Does Windows Update not detect the device while it is connected? So it does not recognize the mp3 player as being connected.
